In town and a Friend

Building near the main square, showing typical European architecture. Very elaborate, gorgeous, and yet, everywhere.

My friend Simona, who was in Kimberley 3 years ago. We finally had a chance to meet up!

Second Spring and Opera

Well, after a couple feet of snow that lasted two weeks, spring has come again, this time feeling more natural. We have had a lot of reain, but today was dry and about +7. Very pleasant. I watched the world champs for Nordic skiing this weekend. They were live in Liberec, Czech Republic. Skiing is my absolute favourite sport, and one thing I really miss about Kimberley, but it was nice to watch. I wish I could have gone to watch it live though, as it was so close!
Last night, I went to the Opera "Boris Godunov". It was very long, 4 hours, but I enjoyed it. It was such a different experience. It was in Russian, but had Slovak subtitles on a monitor above the stage. I was surprised how much I understood, as it was the slovak equivalent of Shakesperian english. I didn't really understand it overall though, as it was extremely complicated. It was about Boris, and his coming into power.

Rotary Ples-Rotary Ball

On Saturday evening, the annual Rotary Ball took place. I dressed up, but not as formally as most, who were in full ball-gown attire. Kind of hard to pull off for a 17-year-old from Kimberley.
It was really a magical evening. It started at 7:30, with a performance by some gypsy children, who were extremely cute, and did quite a good job, considering they'd only practiced the routine for one week. Then, the orchestra began to play, and we went up to another room to commence dinner. There was a large projector with speakers, showing the orchestra on the floor below.
Dinner was a three-course meal, followed by desert. we started with a raw salmon roll, then a pastry with meat and vegetables inside(very small, or 'dainty'), and finally the main course: goose, with mini poataoes and a delicious sauce, accompanied by some little dumplings. Desert was a vanilla Crème Brulée, topped with a chocolate and berries.
At about ten pm, a Slovak 'Golden Oldies' began providing entertainment, and it was quite amusing to watch men in tuxes and women in their gowns to start boogying and grooving. Although the two other girls(American students from the other Bratislava club) and I were the only young ones, we were definitely being out-danced!
Over all, it was a very enjoyable evening, and I am glad I could attend. I hope maybe I we=ill have the chance to go to something similar again one day!

Ah, spring again, now in February

So, as the title suggests, the weather is once again very unwinter-like. We have had rain for three days now, and it melted away the last of the snow, revealing the green grass still living underneath. It really feels like April or early May weather now. The temperature has even gone up to 7 degrees.

Yippee!!

It is no longer the spring-like conditions here; last night, it started snowing, and it hasn't melted, hasn't stopped. The weather had been so mild the last few weeks. Spring, in January. The grass was still green too, because it had only been under snow for about 3/4 weeks. So now it snows again, and the city looks beautiful again.

Nova Rodina-New Family

I moved host families two weekends ago, and don't have as much access to a computer now. I will try to upload some photos in a couple days.
Anyway, things here are ok. I am still getting up at six each morning, and making it to school on time. Anyone who knows me well, can imagine what a feat this is for me! In my new family I now have 2 brothers, and I live in a flat. It's certainly a change, but I like it. I am also closer to the city now, so I can take the tram. It is definitely more flexible! But I do miss my first family. They really helped me adjust to different lifestyles here.
I am still working on the Slovak language, but I seem to have plateaued; my comprehension hasn't really gone up for a while. However, I started reading Harry Potter 4, to try to improve.
